I have posted a couple of articles that everyone might be interested in.

One is Bears I Have Known and Loved.

And the other is You Need to Go Camping, which is a bit esoteric, but if you need to convince someone to go camping with you and they are a little "new age", get them to read it. It will get them intrigued.

The bear one is interesting. But I do something totally against the grain. I may be wrong, but I put my food barrel under the tarp beside the tent. If I am in the remote wilderness my food is needed and there is no way I am going to let a bear take it all. I want the fighting chance to defend my food barrel.

Bears by nature are very skiddish and a loud noise usually sends them running pdq. I am not recommending this to anyone, but I am aware of the risks, and I am prepared to face those risks. Battling a bear or traveling for days or weeks with no food are equally horrible situations in my estimation.
